HCA/Columbia Charged with Anti-Competitive Activities In 1998, the Federal Trade Commission charged Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation with violating a 1995 FTC order to divest hospitals in Utah and Florida in a timely manner. The complaint (shown below) also alleged that the company had failed to honor a “hold-separate” agreement relating to the Utah hospitals and had violated an earlier FTC order related to its acquisition of a competing hospital chain. The charges were settled with an agreement under which the company was ordered to divest seven hospitals and pay a $2.5 million civil penalty.
